Tooth Fillings
Tooth fillings are most commonly used to fill minor cavities, but they can also be used to close spaces in teeth to prevent further progression of tooth decay and to repair broken, chipped, or worn-down teeth.
What can cause a cavity:
- Plaque build-up
- Foods high in sugar or starches
- Dry mouth
- Medicines causing dry mouth
- Poor oral hygiene
- Smoking
When you have a small cavity it may not cause any symptoms. Your check-ups, including x-rays, will help to detect these cavities early or to repair cracked or chipped portions of a tooth. Leaving a tooth untreated can result in more pain and an even more expensive procedure, so you must see your dentist as soon as possible to detect
Root Canals
Root canals are a treatment to repair and save a tooth in response to decay or an infection caused by a cracked tooth or deep cavity, or problems with a previous filling. A root canal is to prevent reinfection of the tooth and to save the natural tooth. The inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned, disinfected, and then filled and sealed. The tooth may be restored with a crown or a filling to protect the tooth.
If left untreated your tooth can continue to cause pain or lead to an abscess so it is important that you seek treatment before there is further decay or infection. A root canal treatment can last a lifetime and maybe your treatment of choice to allow your tooth to be saved and repaired.
